Breast Cancer Rehabilitation

This course provides physiotherapists with essential knowledge of outpatient therapeutic approaches in breast cancer care. A comprehensive review of current diagnostic, surgical, radiation, reconstructive and medical oncologic management for breast cancer is included. Special attention is given to the evaluation, differential diagnosis, and treatment of axillary web syndrome (cording) and postural and scapular dysfunction as well as upper-quadrant soft-tissue changes following breast cancer surgery and radiation therapy. An up-to-date review of recent research findings regarding breast cancer-related lymphedema is presented.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Recognise the different types of breast cancers and their treatments: Diagnostic procedures and staging; Surgical procedures; Oncologic treatment;
  • Radiation oncologic treatments; Reconstructive procedures
  • Identify common sequelae and side effects of breast cancer treatments.
  • Identify techniques for evaluating, determining the differential diagnosis of, and treating patients with axillary web syndrome, upper quarter soft tissue dysfunction, and postural and scapular dysfunction following breast cancer treatments.
  • Execute soft-tissue mobilisation techniques appropriate for facilitation of improved range of motion of the upper extremities and resolution of soft tissue adhesions.
  • Convey basic information regarding lymphedema and infection-prevention techniques to help educate breast cancer patients.
  • Identify the benefits of exercise for breast cancer patients.
  • Identify the stages of tissue healing and when to adjust the treatment of a breast cancer patient based on their stage of tissue healing.

Jodi Winicour, PT, CMT, CLT-LANA, graduated from Indiana University’s Physical Therapy program in 1993 and received her massage therapy certification in 1997 from Michigan’s Health Enrichment Center. Initially practicing general orthopaedic physical therapy at Community Hospital East’s Outpatient Physical Therapy Department in Indianapolis, Indiana, she began specialising in the treatment of cancer patients in 1998 and lectured for the Physical Therapy Department of Indiana University.

Jodi was certified as an MLD/CDT Therapist by Klose Norton Training & Consulting in 1998. She received her CLT-LANA Certification in October, 2001.

In 2000, Jodi joined Cedars Sinai Medical Center where she worked to develop and expand the oncology and lymphedema program in Los Angeles for seven years. Since 2007, she has treated patients with lymphedema, cancer-related dysfunction, and orthopaedic issues at Longmont United Hospital in Longmont, Colorado.

In addition to her work as a full-time clinician, Jodi has served as a class instructor for Klose Training & Consulting’s Lymphedema Therapy Certification course since 2000. She is also the author and instructor for one of Klose Training’s most successful continuing education courses, “Breast Cancer Rehabilitation.”

Jodi has taught and presented at courses and conferences across the United States and in Europe on the topics of lymphedema and breast cancer rehabilitation.

This course is open to Physiotherapists.

Lymphoedema Education Solutions (LES) has reviewed this course. LES has found that this course is delivered by a Physical Therapist who demonstrates physiotherapy assessment and management techniques that require, as a prerequisite, undergraduate level practical skills in shoulder assessment and treatment. This is essential to maintain the safety and appropriateness of treatment for the individual.

NOTE: It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that the skills acquired in this class are within their scope of practice.

To receive a Certificate of Completion, the student must be a registered physiotherapist and watch all video portions of the course, pass an online quiz with a score of 80% or better, and return the required documents specified in the course. The Certificate will then be emailed to the student.

Prerequisites
The student undertakes the online course on the condition that they are suitably qualified in accordance with the online course prerequisites and hold a current registration or, for those that do not have registration, meet the requirements for their profession as per what is listed on the registration form.

Scope of Practice
It is the responsibility of the student – not KTC or LES – to ensure that the skills acquired through any Klose Training course are within their scope of practice as defined by their professional registration board. Any therapist who practices outside their scope of practice is jeopardizing the health of their client/patient and is at risk of losing their registration.

Access
Within three to five business days of receiving the student’s registration and payment, the student will be sent their username, password, and instructions on how to access and navigate the online course. Online Quiz
In order to receive a Certificate of Completion, the student must be a registered health care professional and meet the prerequisites outlined as part of this course registration. The student must also successfully complete the online quiz at the end of the course by answering 80% or more of the questions correctly.

Tuition & Refund Policy
Course tuition is specific to the course. (Refer to the LES website.) The full amount is due at the time of registration. If the student cancels prior to the course access information being emailed, the student will be refunded the tuition electronically within 10 business days, minus a nonrefundable administrative charge of $50.00AUD. No refunds will be given after a username and password have been emailed to the student.

Certificate of Completion
Once a registered professional health care provider has successfully completed the quiz and signed and returned to KTC the Course Evaluation Form, Tracking Log, and Student Information Form, that student will be emailed a Certificate of Completion. (Non-professionals are not eligible for a certificate.)

Continuing Professional Education Points
KTC’s online courses may be used towards the student continuing education points for their professional body and the Australasian Lymphology Association’s National Lymphoedema Practitioners Register. The certificate will state the number of hours completed.
